Event Information

All UCI Community College Honors Research Conference activities take place in the beautiful and state-of-the-art Conference Center that is part of the UCI Student Center Building Map.

UCI's annual  conference gives students in community college honors students the opportunity to present their work.  We invite research-based presentations, posters, and creative performances reflecting inquiry into the humanities, sciences, arts, social sciences, and pre-professional programs; we also welcome results of research into the honors experience.

Awards and Publication Opportunities

Presenting your work at the UCI Community College Honors Research Conference makes you eligible not only for monetary awards but also to submit your work for publication in the HTCC anthology Building Bridges, published through the University of California, Irvine. The deadline to submit abstracts for publication is usually May 1st.

Parking

Please park in the Student Center Parking Structure (located on the corner of Pereira Dr. and West Peltason).  Note that there is an $10 per vehicle fee (for both this and ecological reasons, we highly recommend carpooling or using public transportation whenever possible).  The Student Center is just across Pereira Dr. (building 113 in the red area near the top of this map).  You will also see HTCC directional signs to the conference venue from the parking area.

Publication Purchasing

You are welcome to purchase a printed hard copy of the 2019 Building Bridges Selected Abstracts publication on Amazon.  Proceeds from these sales directly support HTCC community college student scholarships.

General Timeline

  • Dec. 1: Contact your Honors Director for Deadline.  Work with your Honors Program director and your faculty mentor to prepare your proposal; check with your Honors Program office for the deadline for submitting abstracts. Honors directors will submit your contact information, title, 25-word Proposal Description, 250-word Proposal Abstract (see Preparing Your Abstract); note when your director submits your proposal, you will automatically be registered for the conference.  Payment of registration fees should be handled by Honors Program directors.
     

  • December 1 - March 1: Online registration period; the registration fee is $50. After March 1, online registration will not be available. Those registering late will need to do so in person, on the day of the conference. The late registration fee is $60.

  • Late January: Notification of acceptances of proposals
     

  • Feb. 24: Final deadline to contact the Program Coordinator about any additions or corrections to presenter information by NOON (later changes will be included as a program insert)
     

  • March 1: Moderator applications due (click here for moderators' duties) and Scholarship applications due
    ​

  • April 2021: The Conference!
     

  • May 1: Submissions for the anthology Building Bridges are due to Tim Adell.

 

Presentation Types

  • Research Poster: Research posters displayed in the Pacific Ballroom in the Student Center; poster creators are on-hand during designated poster presentation sessions to discuss their research with the public

  • Individual Oral: 12-minute presentation followed by 5 minutes of discussion

  • Group Oral: 20-minute panel presentation by two presenters, followed by 10 minutes of discussion

  • Performance: Student-created art, music, creative writing, drama, dance performed and incorporating an explicit research component


Important Notes

Students may present a maximum of one presentation or performance AND one poster presentation. No two presentations may be on the same topic.

 

For oral presenters, laptops supporting Windows software and media screens will be available, and you will have internet access on the day of the conference.  You are encouraged to use PowerPoint or similar presentation software ONLY if you creatively exploit its visual potential in a manner that enhances your presentation. Consult with your mentor and Honors Program coordinator about what will work best for your presentation. 

 

Note that Mac/iOS devices are not supported for presentations.  If you are using such devices, you will need to provide your own adapter to work with Windows-based technology.
